Signs your gas hot water system needs a repair

Smell gas? Turn off the gas at the meter, don't use switches or flames, open windows and call your gas distributor's emergency line first.

  • Pilot light keeps going out. Often a faulty thermocouple or gas valve. Usually repairable.
  • No hot water or it runs cold quickly. Could be ignition, thermostat or a failing burner.
  • Water leaking around the tank. A leaking relief valve can be replaced. A leaking tank usually means replacement.
  • Rusty or discoloured hot water. A sign the tank lining or anode is wearing out.
  • Popping, rumbling or new noises. Sediment build-up that reduces efficiency and shortens tank life.

Gas continuous flow

  • How it works: Heats water only when a tap is on
  • Hot water supply: Doesn't run out
  • Space: Compact, wall-mounted
  • Best for: Busy homes, back-to-back showers
  • Gas supply: May need a larger gas line

Gas storage

  • How it works: Heats and stores water in a tank
  • Hot water supply: Limited by tank size
  • Space: Needs room for a tank
  • Best for: Steady household demand
  • Gas supply: Standard connection

Gas storage vs continuous flow

Both run on natural gas or LPG. The right one depends on how much hot water you use, your gas supply and where the unit will go.

Frequently asked questions

Can you repair my gas hot water system?

Yes. If the tank is sound and not leaking, most faults can be repaired, including thermocouples, pilot assemblies, gas valves, ignition parts, thermostats and relief valves. Many repairs are done the same day, depending on parts.

Should I choose gas storage or continuous flow?

Storage systems keep a tank of hot water ready and suit homes with steady demand. Continuous flow units heat water on demand, so they don't run out and take up less space. We recommend based on your household size, gas supply and where the unit will go.

Can you switch me from electric to gas hot water?

Yes, if your property has a natural gas connection or suitable LPG setup. We check the gas supply, flue and location requirements and quote the full changeover.

Do I need a licensed gas fitter?

Yes. In NSW, gas hot water work must be done by a licensed gasfitter. All our gas work is carried out by licensed and insured technicians.

What should I do if I smell gas?

Turn off the gas at the meter, avoid using switches or flames, open windows and call your gas distributor's emergency line. Once it is safe, we can inspect and repair the hot water system.
